Life Experiment 12: 2 Pints (of water) Before Breakfast
Takeaways: Drinking one litre of water every morning provided some noticeable benefits:
1. Intermittent fasting was easier as my hunger was reduced.
2. My weight went from 162.2 to 160 lbs
3. There were no noticeable effects on my energy levels.
4. The 20 minutes in the morning when I drank my water provided an effective window to plan my day and to respond to Emails that required my attention.
5. It provided a quick way to get 1/3 of my recommended daily amount of water within 30 minutes of waking up.
Our bodies are 60% water and every cell in our body requires water to operate effectively. It would therefore stand to reason that we should remain hydrated.
It is recommended that we consume 3 liters (about 6 pints) of water a day. These 6 pints can be through drinking or via the foods that we eat.
Despite never recording how much I drink, I’d always presumed that I drank enough water, which, in hindsight is never a good idea to do.
My health is important to me, and so are my energy levels, as they have a direct correlation on how productive I am. I wanted to test theory that drinking water can:
+ Increased Energy
+ Reduced appetite
+ Improved health
+ Improved skin quality
Like with any new habit or routine, it is important to set up a trigger and a reward system to help you remember and solidify the new habit in your daily life.
Every morning after I would wake up, instead of pouring my usual cup of coffee, I would take two large glasses of water. I keep filtered water in my fridge, and I found that it wasn’t pleasant drinking so much cold water so quickly. I found that adding some boiling water to the cold water helped to make the water much easier to drink.
The incentive for finishing my litre of water was my usual cup of coffee. I found that incorporating the water into my routine like this made the new habit easy to stick to.
The 15-20 minutes that I took to leisurely drink my water an coffee provided an excellent opportunity to reply to Emails that required my attention, allowing for my developers to get on with their work. Usually I would wait until after I finished my daily run and meditation before responding to Emails and doing other work related activities. This new routine helped to improve the workflow of both myself and my team.
The Effects of Starting the Day with 2 Pints of Water
I was expecting that water would be a magic cure to lose weight. Over the month I did see a reduction of about 2 pounds, but for some reason I thought it would have a larger effect.
I did not notice a significant change in my energy levels from drinking water in the morning, maybe this was because I ordinarily drink enough water. On my birthday, when my routine was out of the norm, and I did not drink water, I found that I had very low energy levels. The other variable on this day was that I had a carb heavy breakfast. It would be interesting to try eating a carb heavy breakfast and having the water to see if this would have any effect on my energy levels.
Going to the restroom more.
One of the advantages of drinking more was that I was going to the restroom more, forcing me to get out of my seat and to move around. Usually when I get into a productive streak, I stay focused and do not move. Drinking so much water was was a good nudge to stop me from being so sendry.
Despite not seeing so many noticeable benefits of drinking 2 pints of water in the morning, I feel being hydrated provides subtle and more longer term benefits (assuming you already get enough water). Not only will water help to wash out toxins and deliver nutrients to my cells but it also acts as a self imposed timer which helps me be more productive and nudges me to move more.
